Common Name: Horstmanns Silberlocke Fir
(Formerly 'Horstmann's Silberlocke. ') A highly unusual and showy selection of the Korean Fir! Its short, strongly recurved needles, almost cupped around each stem, display brilliant silvery undersides. They clothe a striking frame of irregular branching to create an effect of gleaming color and startling, bristly texture. Lovely upright steel blue cones with violet-purple overtones complete the picture. 'Silberlocke' is exceptionally slow-growing, and ultimately reaches 20 to 30 feet tall and 10 feet wide over time. It has demonstrated exceptional heat tolerance in its southernmost range, making it a great choice for Southern gardens. Zones 4-7. Fruit description as pictured an intersting cone, purple at maturity but pale green in infancy but often with an exudate of resin present. Cones are rare in at young age but appearing common on mature specimens. Held upright above the foliage. Abies homolepis 'Horstmann's Silberlocke', commonly known as 'Horstmann's Silberlocke', is a cultivar of the Nikko fir species native to Japan. Here are some of the characteristics that distinguish this cultivar: Needle Appearance: One of the most distinctive features of 'Silberlocke' is its needles. They are twisted and have silvery-white undersides, which give the tree a striking and unique appearance. This silvery effect contrasts beautifully with the deep green upper sides of the needles. Compact Growth Habit: 'Silberlocke' tends to have a relatively compact growth habit, making it suitable for smaller gardens or landscapes where space is limited. It typically grows into a conical shape with dense foliage. Slow Growth Rate: Like many other firs, 'Silberlocke' is considered a slow-growing tree. While this means it may take some time to reach its mature size, it also contributes to its longevity and durability once established. Ornamental Value: 'Horstmann's Silberlocke' is prized for its ornamental value in gardens and landscapes. Its unique needle structure and coloration make it an eye-catching focal point in any setting, whether used as a specimen tree, in mixed borders, or as part of a woodland garden. Adaptability: While 'Silberlocke' thrives in cool, moist, well-drained soil and partial shade, it can adapt to various soil types and light conditions. However, it generally prefers locations with some protection from harsh afternoon sun, especially in hotter climates. Year-Round Interest: One of the significant benefits of 'Silberlocke' is its year-round appeal. Its striking foliage remains attractive throughout the seasons, providing interest even during the winter months when many other plants are dormant. Maintenance: Once established, 'Horstmann's Silberlocke' generally requires minimal maintenance. Regular watering during dry spells and occasional pruning to maintain its shape are typically all that's needed to keep this cultivar healthy and looking its best.
