Common Name: American Hop Hornbeam
Ostrya virginiana is a small to medium native deciduous understory tree with a rounded to oval crown, fine branching, and attractive birch-like foliage. The leaves are oval, sharply double-toothed, and medium to dark green in summer, turning yellow in fall. In spring, male catkins and small female flowers appear, followed by papery, hop-like seed clusters that hang from the branches and mature from pale green to tan. Its very hard wood gives it the common name “ironwood.” Type: Deciduous native tree Mature Size: 20–30 ft. wide × 25–40 ft. tall; occasionally up to 50 ft. in ideal conditions 10-Year Size: Slow growing; often about 10–15 ft. tall after 15 years USDA Zones: 3a–9b Form: Rounded to oval crown; horizontal to slightly drooping branches Light: Full sun to part shade; naturally found as an understory tree Soil / Water: Adaptable; tolerates loam, clay, rocky soil, and moist to dry conditions once established Bloom Time / Length: April; flowers are small and not showy, followed by ornamental hop-like fruit clusters Wildlife: Seeds provide limited food for birds and small mammals; foliage supports native insects; dense branching offers cover Features & Landscape Uses: American hophornbeam is a durable native tree for woodland edges, naturalized areas, native plant gardens, understory plantings, small shade-tree use, and tough landscape sites. It is valued for its clean foliage, interesting bark, hop-like seed clusters, drought tolerance, and ability to grow in dry or rocky soils. It is also deer tolerant and low maintenance once established. Care: Plant in well-drained soil and water regularly while young. Once established, it tolerates dry conditions better than many understory trees. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. It grows slowly, so avoid heavy pruning unless needed.
