Common Name: Blue False Indigo, Plains False Indigo
Baptisia australis is distinctively characterized by its lovely spikes of dark indigo pea-like blossoms often with streaked of white or cream in late spring to early summer. The flowers are followed by deep grey seed ponds. Glossy dark green clover-like trifoliate leaves turn gray-green in fall. The leaves enhance the exquisiteness of this variety. This vigorous perennial typically grows 6 ft tall and spread 4 ft wide in clump-forming habit of growth. The plant should be put in direct sunlight at least 6 hours per day. It prefers rich moist soil. Deer Resistant. A great cut flower and containers.
